Summer Storms Can Damage Your Roof!

June 1, 2017

Summer is one of the best times of year. School is out, there are tons of summer activities to enjoy, and it’s a great time to do any repair work needed on your home. Your home has been built to handle a lot of pressure and winds from the elements, but nothing can last forever. Even though summer storms may be rare in Nashville, they can still cause some issues for roofs. Today, we have listed the top types of weather issues that can cause damage during the summer.

Hail

Hail is likely the most familiar form of damage when it comes to weather. These storms will only happen a few times per year in the summer, but they can cause quite a bit of damage when they hit. Since hailstones range in size from about a pea to the size of a baseball, you never know how your roof will withstand the damage. Your roof was built specifically to protect the inside of your home, but that doesn’t mean that severe damage can’t still be done. After a bad storm, check for the obvious signs of damage. While you may be able to see damaged shingles from the ground, also check for any granules in the yard or in your gutters. There may even be holes in your roof if the storm was bad enough. If you aren’t sure if hail damaged your roof, give our roofers a call!

Thunderstorms

Thunder will not harm your home, so that’s the good news! It’s also quite rare for lightning to strike your home directly. The bad news is, the high winds and heavy rain that accompanies a thunderstorm can cause debris to strike you roof and lead to serious issues down the road. Wind can even take off loose shingles and blow them into your yard. Once your roof has been damaged, repairs need to be made immediately in order to avoid further trouble in the future, including serious leaks.

Heavy Rain

When it comes down to it, water is one of the worst things that can happen to your roof. Your roof has been designed to keep the water out, but when the roof is damaged in any way, even in a small way, the summer rain might be just enough to cause a small collapse. Also, if your gutters aren’t as clean as they should be, the gutters can overflow and even lead to an overflow in your attic or even around the foundation. Check that your gutters are as clean as possible for proper flow. If you see any standing rain on your roof, please call us!

Humidity

After a heavy rain, it will take a little while for the roof to dry fully. If your roof was not made with high-quality materials, then it’s more likely that it can’t handle the adverse effects of humidity. If you have an older roof, contact our professionals to come take a look.
