Can I Paint Aluminum Gutters?

April 6, 2017

If your gutters are in great condition, but you are ready to change up the color scheme of your home, you might be wondering what the best process is. Do you need all new gutters? Can you paint over your current ones? What do you do if your current gutters are damaged? Read on to learn more from Sparks Roofing! We are the team to call if you need gutter repair or installation.

Can Gutters be Painted?

We have good news and bad news! The good news is, with care and careful attention to detail, you can successfully paint your aluminum gutters. However, if you think you can just slap a layer of paint on them without any prep work, the end result is going to look disastrous! If you pay close attention to our instructions, then your gutters will look wonderful.

What’s the Key to Painting Gutters?

The secret to painting your gutters is cleaning and priming. When you clean off the dirt and grime that has accumulated over the years and add a smooth layer of primer, you are setting your gutters up for success. Be sure to use the right primer if you’re going to use a common paint that contains ammonia.

Can I Use a Pressure Washer to Clean the Gutters?

We don’t necessarily recommend using a pressure washer for a few reasons. First, the pressure alone won’t be enough to remove all the dirt that needs to be taken off in order to leave an even layer of paint. Second, even soap water in the pressure washer won’t remove all the dirt. Instead, rubbing away the dirt with soap and rinsing it with water is the most effective method. We recommend doing the cleaning by hand and using some sort of bleach so you can get the most effective results.

What Sort of Primer Should I Use?

Whatever primer you choose on your gutters, make sure it’s not a latex paint primer that contains ammonia. Ammonia can often react with any oxidized aluminum that may be hiding in bare spots on your gutters. This creates gas bubbles and can ruin the surface of your paint job. We recommend choosing a clear, acrylic bonding primer or regular, oil-base metal primer. Just thin the primer first!

When Should I Apply the Paint?

Paint on your final coat of paint within 24 hours of applying your primer. This will ensure that the top coat of paint will bond better and leave a polished result.
