Common Myths About Metal Roofing

July 1, 2016

For homeowners in Clarksville, Nashville, and the rest of Tennessee, metal roofing can be a popular choice. If you are considering upgrading your home’s roof, you may have heard one or more of the following myths about metal roofs. People like to talk about things they don’t understand, but the professional roofers of Sparks Roofing are here to tell you that the following claims about metal roofing are absolutely not true. In this blog, we will provide solid reasons to dispel them.

1. Metal roofs are more prone to lightning strikes.

You might think that since metal is an electric conductor, lightning would be more likely to strike a home with metal roofing. This isn’t true for a couple of reasons. First, metal is only a good conductor when it can act as a path for electricity to flow. Because your roof offers no direct path to the ground, it is not a sufficient avenue for electron travel. Second, every home should be equipped with a lightning rod which does supply that path, sparing the rest of the building from damage caused by electrical discharge.

2. Metal roofing is louder in the rain.

Okay, so technically this is true. Rain drops falling on a metal roof will be louder than it is on shingles. However, that’s only from the outside of the house. The inside of your home is separated by a buffer of open attic space and thermal insulation. That air gap is sufficient to deaden any sound from your roof, preventing it from disturbing you in the rooms below.

3. Metal roofs are not energy efficient.

It is true that metal is a better thermal conductor than shingles, and that’s the idea from which this myth originated. What people don’t realize, though, is that homes don’t depend on the actual roof to insulate the home and prevent the indoor temperature from changing. That’s the job of your attic insulation. Your attic actually has a system of vents that allows for free movement and exchange of outdoor air below your roof, so its thermal properties don’t even enter into the equation.

If you’re looking for a durable, attractive way to protect and add value to your Clarksville area home, metal roofing is the answer. Despite rumors to the contrary, a metal roof is safe, cost effective, and one of the best investments that a homeowner can make. Contact Sparks Roofing today to learn more!
